What does the Bible say about Christian tithing?
-
Should a Christian tithe?
-
Answer:
The commandment to tithe, or contribute a tenth of ones belongings, was part of the Law given to the ancient nation of Israel. However, the Bible makes it clear that this Law including the commandment to collect tithes does not apply to Christians. Hebrews 7:5,18 - "True, according to the Law, those of the sons of Levi who receive their priestly office have a commandment to collect tithes from the people, that is, from their brothers, even though these are descendants of Abraham......... 18 So, then, the former commandment is set aside because it is weak and ineffective." Jesus' death and ransom sacrifice "erased the handwritten document that consisted of decrees and was in opposition to us. He has taken it out of the way by nailing it to the torture stake." (Colossians 2:14)

The Bible states that the sacrificial death of Jesus, in 33 C.E., “blotted out,” or “abolished,” the Law and with it the “commandment to collect tithes.” (Colossians 2:13, 14; Ephesians 2:13-15; Hebrews 7:5, 18) Rather than specifying an amount or a percentage, accordingly to 1 Corinthians 16:2 "On the first day of every week, each one . . . should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income.” (NIV) By planning and reserving an amount on a regular basis, Christians would not feel pressured into giving begrudgingly. For each Christian, the decision of how much to give was to be a private matter, one that ‘he had resolved in his own heart.’ (2 Corinthians 9:5, 7)

Christian giving is voluntary. It takes into account that each individual has different circumstances in life. “If the readiness is there first,” the Bible says, “it is especially acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what a person does not have.” (2 Corinthians 8:12) How much, then, should you give? That is a question that you must resolve for yourself. The depth of your own heart appreciation for God—not some predetermined tithing formula—will determine what you give. As the Bible urges: “Let each one do just as he has resolved in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:7) Tithing was a provision of the Mosaic Law covenant to support Israel’s temple and priesthood. For Christians today, it is neither commanded nor necessary.

Christians are not under the Law covenant given to Israel (where the nation of Israel was clearly instructed about the amount God required them to give). So they are not obliged to give a set amount to God. However, in the true Christian congregation, giving is a source of much joy. They give in line with the Bible principle at Acts 20:35 where Jesus himself said “there is more happiness in giving than there is in receiving." Tithing/donations are voluntary and a personal decision as to how much a Christian chooses to give. "Let each one do just as he has resolved in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver" (2 Cor. 8:12; 9:7).

When you want to know about something you look up the first occurrence in the bible. Genesis 14:18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God. 19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth: 20 And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all. According to this usage, a tithe is a tenth of everything the giver owns and it is a one time gift. Modern preachers insist the tithe is a tenth of your income and it is a holy tax and they are the holy tax collectors. It's no wonder that so many people are offended by what they see in organized churches. The bible says absolutely nothing about Christians tithing.

The New Testament talks about the importance and benefits of giving. We are to give as we are able. Sometimes that means giving more than 10 percent; sometimes that may mean giving less. It all depends on the ability of the Christian and the needs of the church. Every Christian should diligently pray and seek God's wisdom in the matter of participating in tithing and/or how much to give (James 1:5). Above all, all tithes and offerings should be given with pure motives and an attitude of worship to God and service to the body of Christ. "Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver"(2 Corinthians 9:7). Tithing was part of a body of laws given by God through Moses to the ancient nation of Israel. Twelve tribes of Israel were required by law to support a 13th tribe, the priestly Levites, who had no land inheritance. This enabled the Levites to concentrate on the spiritual needs of the nation. (Numbers 18:21-24) Being an agricultural people, the Israelites were not required to pay the tithe in cash. Rather, it was to come from the land’s produce and from the increase in livestock. If produce was to be tithed and an Israelite wanted to give money instead, then he had to pay 20 percent more than the value of the produce. (Leviticus 27:30-33) Today,Christians are encouraged to give generously, which may even be more than a tenth if they can afford it. (Luke 18:22; Acts 20:35)

Under the mosaic law this was a requirement for the nation of Israel Leviticus 27;30 says that every part of the land whether from produce of the field or the fruits of the trees belong to Jehovah , it is something holy to Jehovah ( new world translation bible) but that law was abolished on the basis of Jesus death, his ransom sacrifice did away with the mosaic law, so therefore monetary tithing is not a requirement anymore, Colossians 2:14 helps us to appreciate this fact....... He meaning God has forgiving us our trespasses and erased the handwritten document that consisted of decrees and was in opposition to us, He has taken it out , (referring to the mosaic law )by nailing it to the torture stake. ( by means of our savior and king Jesus Christ's ransom sacrifice.....
