What are the requirements for colleges?

Why isn't ASL considered a "real" language by colleges for General Education requirements?

  • I don't know about other colleges, but mine doesn't allow me to learn ASL as my language in my general ed requirements. Why??

  • Answer:

It has to do with it not being considered a foreign language. It is a valid language but in the same way a computer programming language would not count, it too is not considered a foreign language by you school. I chose Spanish, I wish I had chosen French.

Other answers

When I went to College, the idea apparently was intended for us to be able to use another language for technical journals. ASL probably doesn't meet that idea.

Probably because of the limited culture that it benefits/serves, like any other lesser known languages: Zulu, Romanian, Esperanto. Comply with their guidelines, but learn it anyway.

MonaSez

It isn't foreign language.
