How is it better to book hotel rooms, directly from hotel or via travel site like Booking?

I've heard from friends that prices may be different and there could be a better offer from hotel. Does it make sense, since booking says "best offer granted".

Go to sites and compare.. then go to hotel and compare... Then choose the cheapest rate.. then tell yourself that was easy and then thank me.

I love "booking.com". Most of the time all you have to pay is the deposit. You'll pay the balance when you check out. I've been using them forever.
