Can I "walk through" a route in Google Street View?

Am I using Google Street View wrong? I have two destinations in Google Maps and the resulting route was calculated. What I would like to do is "walk through" the path in the full screen street view. Is this possible? Because it's not working the way I would expect and ironically my Google-Fu is not really helping me. To be very clear of what I'm looking for I created a sample route between the Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center as https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Empire+State+Building,+350+5th+Ave,+New+York,+NY+10118/Rockefeller+Center,+45+Rockefeller+Plaza,+New+York,+NY+10111/@40.7532522,-73.9894344,15z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x89c259a9b3117469:0xd134e199a405a163!2m2!1d-73.985664!2d40.74844!1m5!1m1!1s0x89c258fecf664df5:0x33d224a0d5dacca2!2m2!1d-73.978674!2d40.75874!3e2(Note that is also in the "Walking" mode.) Click on the "preview steps" link and a small thumbnail for Street View appears. This is only a snapshot of that particular step.Click on that Street View thumbnail and you're transported to the full screen street view which is cool, but this now appears "detached" from the original route. In other words you can navigate by clicking, using the keyboard, etc. but this view is not linked to the route created.I assumed that you could navigate completely in the street view and it would keep you "fixed" on your original route (or at least indicate that you were on that path), but I don't see it doing that. Maybe I'm just missing something obvious? A little searching on the webs showed me this neat http://www.brianfolts.com/driver/, but this is not really what I'm looking for either, as it only shows you selected images on the path.

This used to be a thing you could do on the old google maps. Switch to google maps classic and there should be a http://i.imgur.com/65c7W9n.jpg when you are in Street View.

I think you're correct, I don't think this is a thing you can do with GoogleMaps strictly though Google Earth has a "fly over" capability which might do something similar enough for you? http://www.mapmywalk.com/us/new-york-city-ny/sightseeing-tour-of-nyc-route-2744544 from MapMyWalk which uses GoogleEarth (click View 3D Video of this Map). So you can see what the routes would look like but you definitely can't see street level stuff like storefronts. http://ask.metafilter.com/125230/Automated-Streetview-in-Google-Maps asked here about five years ago.

And if you click on the arrow in the top left corner of the map you can expand it so the map showing the route is the bottom half and street view is the top half.

This would be a wonderful feature! I don't believe Street View paths are available currently, but it would be a powerful enhancement. Route guidance in street view could take the form of a semitransparent path marking, or some floating directional/turn arrows. Or perhaps an easier enhancement to the https://support.google.com/maps/answer/4398222?hl=en&ref_topic=3092425 might be to keep the route marked on the small map retained in the lower left corner of the Street View. The "Pegman" would show your position on the route. Thinking about this question led me to discover the https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!categories/maps, which seems like a good place to suggest new features.
