How To Wholesale Your Books?

How can I segregate my Google Play Books for different family members?

  • My kids have just started buying books from Google Play. All of our books are in one big library. How do I go about organising them so that we each only see our own books? It all started when I read a bedtime story to my oldest son from my Android phone. This was followed by the revelation that The Exploits of Moominpappa had suddenly appeared on his tablet, at exactly the page we'd finished the night before. Now he wants more books on his tablet. And if the novelty of that gets him reading even more books, I'm all for it. But... all of our Android devices are set up to use my Google account, so any books I buy for myself end up in my kids' library, and theirs end up in mine. What I'd like is to split these up in some way, so that we each have our own books. It's less about wanting to keep my kids from reading age-inappropriate stuff (kids will find books, whatever you do), more about each of us having our own 'shelf' of books. I tried setting up Google accounts for my kids, but they apparently have age restrictions on who can hold an email account. What other options do I have? Is there a clever filtering app of some sort that would allow me to manage the contents of Google Books on each device? Am I missing something obvious?

I don't think you need a Gmail account anymore for Google accounts. Have you tried setting up accounts for them based on non-Gmail addresses you control?

I ended up setting up a Google account for my daughter, and putting my birthdate in the age field. It's roughly accurate--it's an account that I'm creating, in her name, to organize and maintain all the books, site registrations, etc, that she signs up for. It's for my ease of access and convenience, at this point, not hers, and it's never been a problem--a year or two back, Google locked the account pending age verification, and I simply sent in my information, and they said fine.
