How to get the music from my Ubuntu machine to my Airport Express?
-
How would you push audio from a 64-bit Ubuntu 14.04 machine to an Airport Express? Maybe you can help me. I'm working on a utility-player for my living room consisting of a relatively old Dell laptop running 64-bit Ubuntu 14.04 that's going to be the home's file server and living room web browser. After a solid day of trying to get samba working on Kubuntu, settled on Ubuntu because samba seems to be better supported. The final touch is a requirement that I can play music from it to my Airport Express through AirPlay. Since Pulseaudio's RAOP protocol seems to have stopped working after Airport's first iteration (and subsequent attempts to build a patch with RAOP2 have failed), I figured I'd just try and WINE some iTunes, which WINE doesn't want to do, because 32 bit versions won't install (even on PlayforLinux) and the 64 bit versions cry out for Vista. I've tried various linux/Ubuntu forums already, but they're hopeless and I like you better anyway. Now, all I need to be able to do is pipe audio (with whatever lag that entails) via AirPlay. What would you do? Yes, virtualization is out of the question, although I am contemplating a VM of 32-bit Ubuntu if anybody knows if that would work.

Answer:
So, you want it all done via that machine with no other devices involved? Because if you have an iOS device you could probably set up a dlna server and then use something like 8player on iOS to play it and re-broadcast via AirPlay. But if these things are all in the same room, it may be easier to bypass the Airport and just run a long audio cable (I'm sure you'd have thought of that if it were practical).

I saw lots of pages somewhat trying to do this (e.g. https://code.google.com/p/open-airplay/ http://lifehacker.com/5802958/how-to-make-your-entire-home-airplay-compatible https://github.com/PascalW/Airplayer/blob/master/INSTALL.mdown) but I think the page you want should be http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/apples-airtunes-ubuntulinux/

primethyme - Yeah, unfortunately just running an audio cable isn't really an option. I also don't have a spare iOS device available to try that (although thanks for the thought!). blob - Sadly it looks like that solution doesn't work anymore, as Pulseaudio doesn't work with newer Airplay devices, and nobody seems to be updating it.
