What do I include in a resume when I've never had a job?

I live in Canada. Is it ok to not include a 1 month old job on your resume?

  • I have worked at some place for about 1 whole month. I don't want to include it on my resume, but usually employers are asking for employment history in descending order starting from a most recent job. Can I still leave that last one out of my resume, or at least state it, but put a check mark to not contact the employer for references?

  • Answer:

It sounds like your short stint wasn't successful based on your reluctancy to place it on your resume. If you choose not to place it on your resume, that is your choice. However you are going to have to account for any gaps. Employers always look at any gaps or recent stints of unemployment. Thus, it might be advantageous to add the one month of employment. If you were fired, then you will have to think of something else to help you in your next job search. However, if this is a temp or contract position then it is already understood that the length of time was short based on the stated duration. Adding any experience is better than having less, but you have to approach this carefully, especially if you were terminated.

If it's that bad then just cut it out of there and add 1 month to the job before that.

I'd leave it out, if you include it and say don't contact the employer they are automatically going to think you were fired with cause and that's why you don't want them to call. it's a bad idea to LIE on a resume/application but there's nothing says you can't omit information. it's not unusual to spend a month or to between jobs
