Starbucks wants us to improve our race relations. Are they going too far? Check it out

Starbucks wants to do more than just act as your go-to spot for your morning coffee: they also want to be the harbingers of social change. Starbucks’ CEO Howard Schultz hopes to open up conversations about race relations in a new initiative called Race Together, in which baristas are invited to write the phrase on coffee cups, instead of just patron’s names. The act is meant to spark meaningful discussion. •Gay Marriage Endorsement Nets Starbucks More Thanks Than Boycotts •Why Do People Eat Food at Starbucks? •31 Drinks from the Starbucks Secret Menu •Things Everyone Thinks While Waiting In Line at Starbucks •Starbucks Challenge: Eat Only at Starbucks for 1 Year What if we were to write 'Race Together' on every Starbucks cup, and that facilitated a conversation between you and our customers?" Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz said in a video to his employees explaining the campaign. "And what if our customers as a result of that had a renewed level of understanding and sensitivity about the issue, and they themselves would spread that to their own sphere of influence?" USA Today published these ideas in a free newspaper this week, explaining how racial and diversity views have changed since 1960, and how they are projected to grow by 2060. The piece also poses questions like "what is the chance that the next person I meet will be different from me?" and “How have my racial views evolved from those of my parents?” Many Starbucks employees have already shared their experiences: “I’m a three-year partner in a Midwest city that would have no racial diversity if not for the college nearby,” writes barista Desirae. “I’ve lost count of the number of times people have asked me, ‘What are you?’ ‘Excuse me,’ I’d say knowing exactly what they wanted to know. ‘What race am I? My mother is black and my father is a Japanese American.’ ‘Oh,’

Answer:
I don't think this is going to reach the right people somehow. I have thought this through and realized by promoting racial harmony, Starbucks will only be giving attention to racism. What they need is a p.r. firm to promote the idea that racism is no longer in existence since discrimination was outlawed decades ago. This is how the tobacco companies operated with the health and addiction questions about smoking. In spite of all the research, deny, deny, deny! Now the climate change deniers are doing the same thing and employing the exact strategy of Big Tobacco by pooh-poohing legitimate research and calling it a liberal plot! Look how many people are still copping to that idea. Racism doesn't exist and there is no reason to promote racial harmony because anything that doesn't exist should be ignored! How do you like that for a starting point?? ;^)

While it seems well-intentioned, this sounds like an idea which will only lead to embarrassment and backlash for Starbucks.

Considering that that won't accomplish shit, probably not. The only "meaningful discussion" that'll come from this move is "is this my Ipsum Schlockotappi, or someone else's? I can't find a name on here. What's with all this text, anyhow? I'd better wait... no, I think maybe... excuse me, barista, is this mi—okay, nevermind. Ignore me and go back to the blender. Fucking hipsters. Ah, what the hell, it's probably mine. I'm running late to my meeting anyway. Hey, what the hell? This is a walnut fudge schlockotappi! I ordered butterscotch." "Hey, did you see if they made my ipsum walnut fudge schlockotappi yet?"
