How can I test my typing speed?

How can you type over 40 wpm with a side paper holder, I'm fine on a program but when I start using a paper holder which is necessary for the typing test, my speed goes way down! Help

  Stop looking at the keys. Your fingers should be on the home keys, which is easy enough to tell because you should have a dot or raised bar on the F and J keys. My speed doesn't change no matter what I'm looking at, because I never have to look at my fingers.
