What is the difference between prison and jail? I wasn't even aware there was a difference until I joined AB. So what is the difference?

In the U.S. a prison holds people convicted of felonies (crimes that carry a sentence of a year or longer), while a jail holds people awaiting trial and people convicted of misdemeanors (crimes that carry a sentence of less than a year).

I think prison's supposed to be like maximum detention, whereas jail is just like s holding place for more minor offenses. Not 100% sure, though.
