Quitting job after only 6 months, good or bad idea?

  • Ok, so I'm 22 and a part-time janitor, this is my first job and I've been employed with this company for almost 6 months. But lately I've been considering the possibility of quitting and finding a better job because although I like my job it doesn't really pay that much ($7.50 an hour, 4 days a week). That's nowhere near enough to help me get through college and move into my own place (I still live with my mom). Even if I had my own place there's rent, utilities, food and gas to consider and I just don't make enough to cover all of that. I initially wanted this job only because it would add some experience on my resume, so now that I have I'm wondering whether it would be a good idea to leave for a better job after only 6 months or if I should just stick it out a while longer, to a year at least? I have to admit there's a part of me that's afraid to risk quitting though because it isn't guaranteed that I'll land another job right away in this economy and I can't afford to be unemployed without any income if I plan on starting college soon. What should I do?

  • Answer:

Read your last paragraph. Land another job before quitting your current job.

Without even reading 100% of your question I would suggest keeping this janitor job WHILE searching for something better. $7.50 an hour 4 days a week is better than $0 an hour and spending gas money, time and HOPING to get a new job.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush..This expression means that it is better to have an advantage or opportunity that is certain than having one that is worth more but is not so certain.

I'm retired now but through my life I had about 15 jobs, from an engineering apprenticeship to my own company. I had three principles: 1, follow your instincts, 2. look after yourself, i.e don't stay in a job just to please your boss, and 3. NEVER leave any job until you safely have another. Pay isn't everything, look for prospects, position, contentment and perks. And be lucky.

Stay at home. Go to college. Work as much as you can while getting good grades. THAT is what will be good on your CV.

I agree with the other three folks...7.50 is better than nothing, and if you like your job, keep it until you get something better. (Actually, even if you didn't like your job, I'd tell you to keep it until you found something better.) Times are tough. You can't just walk away.

It takes a very brave person to quit their job.

Always have the second job lined up before you quit your first job. 6 months is long enough for your age, situation and the job. Find a better job, then quit.

I know of at least 3 million people that would love to have your job. Yea, make someone happy, quit.
