What do you think about sales people?

Fox pundit wonders if CVS can legally halt tobacco sales. Are we thru the looking glass now people? What do you think of this?

  • On February 5, CVS Caremark announced that it would stop selling cigarettes and other tobacco products at its pharmacy stores by the beginning of October. The move was met with praise from health organizations like the American Cancer Society and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the nation's largest philanthropy dedicated to public health. President Obama also weighed in on the decision with a statement of support, saying it was a "profoundly positive" move and will help advance efforts "to reduce tobacco-related deaths, cancer, and heart disease, as well as bring down health care costs." As if on cue, Fox News responded to Obama's praise by manufacturing a controversy over the CVS decision. On Fox's The Real Story, host Gretchen Carlson approached the CVS decision with suspicion and a remarkably uninformed premise, asking, "Is it OK legally ... to restrict tobacco availability in a private store like this?" She questioned her guests as to whether they would continue shopping at CVS and observed that, "For people who smoke, you know, they have a right to buy cigarettes. It's not illegal." http://crooksandliars.com/2014/02/fox-news-wonders-if-cvs-can-legally-halt

  • Answer:

If CVS does not want to sell tobacco products, that's their legal right not to sell tobacco products, and more power to them.

Face it. CVS can sell or not sell anything they want. It's all about money. In some states, the price of a carton of cigarettes is approaching $100. With more and more people either quitting or heading to Indian reservations to buy cigarettes, it makes sense to drop the product.

The commentator is correct that cigarettes are not illegal. But it is a non sequiter that CVS should sell them. One may want to purchase cigarettes but it is hardly a "right". News commentators should not be so careless in their terminology. There are a great many places one may go to purchase cigarettes. CVS's decision is not restricting anyone's cigarette purchasing, they simply must go else where. This is a decision I would support and I often shop at CVS for sundry items.

Does CVS sell alcohol? How about make up and health care products that are tested on animals that are tortured and die? CVS is a publicly traded company and sold $2 billion worth of cigarettes. The company is responsible to shareholders for that decline in revenue, since it will lower the share price. It sounds like there is a company executive who is thinking about running for public office, so he is clearing the deck of potential criticism. However, that is not the way to run a company.
