Walmart return/exchange policy?

WalMart refuses to sell alcohol to 57 year old man who had his 15 year old daughter with him. What do you think of the store policy?

  • Jim Davis simply wanted to buy two six packs of Budweiser and some Smirnoff for his wife. But when the 57-year-old from rural State Center reached the checkout counter at the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Ames on July 13, with $80 in groceries and the alcohol, something odd happened. The clerk carded his 15-year-old daughter — not him. Because the teen had no ID, the employee refused to sell to Davis. It's part of Wal-Mart's recent efforts to experiment with new ways to thwart underage drinking, the store's customer service department told Davis in response to a complaint he made. The store has had a policy since 2003 requiring ID from all customers who appear under the age of 40. "In order to ensure that alcoholic beverages and tobacco are not sold to minors, Walmart is testing point-of-sale age checks in some locations across the country," the customer service statement read. "By testing this, we hope to discover the best methods for ensuring that products are not sold illegally to minors. In addition, to comply with federal laws, stores may ask for the ID from individuals within a group other than the person making the purchase." http://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/investigations/readers-watchdog/2014/07/28/readers-watchdog-walmart-alcohol/13258253/

I call bullshit on this one! The store should not sell to underage people and that's it. If the adult has a child with them, so what! It's ridiculous to refuse to sell to me because my teen is in the store with me. That's crapola!!!! And I don't even drink alcohol!! Underage drinking is a parental problem. This goes back to the argument of liquor only being sold by the state in state retail outlets. I hate to see mothers with young children taking their children down the liquor aisle because that's where the bread is too.

Imagine if they tried as hard to stop ILLEGAL drug sales to minors, prevented men having underage sex with 12 year old prostitutes or stopped 14 years old from having kids. Talk about FKED up priorities.

THE BANNIBAL ONE

This isnt merely Walmart policy. It is ATF law. If the minor is observed handling the alcohol in anyway, even helping to load it onto the conveyor, The federal law requires that the apparent minor be I'd checked. If the apparent minor is confirmed under 21, the sale must be canceled. The law provides for " apparent minors showing suspicious interest" to be left at store discretion. Its really no big deal. Load and unload your own beer, don't let your kids handle it. End of story. The store does hold the liquer license. Their risk, their decision.

Chop her head off AGAIN

Its another bullshit law to control us. Boycotting this piece of shit store would help. When the leaders are helpless against major and violent crimes they put these laws in place. You can die in a war for money but can not drink at 18.I never thought I'd live to see our country destroyed. be politically correct or WE have our ways!!!! YEAHhhhhhhhhhhhhh byeeexxx

THE BANNIBAL ONE

The local Great Medocrity's cash registers pop up the question, "Is customer over 40?" It seems they don't really want my money that badly and I'm nearly twice their stupid age criterion.

I'll bet the store down the street would welcome his business.

So if he could've had the kid wait outside while he went back in and made his purchase. Hardly a big deal. There are many worse things happening in the world.

I used to work in one of the biggest liquor departments in the Midwest. I think the Walmart policy is a terrible policy. I think the drinking age should be eighteen anyway. I will say, though, that the clerk and the company had a right to be doing what they are doing. I did not have to serve anyone for any reason and neither do they. I will say that if I had a policy like that, I would not have been in business very long. I am sure Walmart does not care about the loss of business, though.

I have bought alcohol for myself when I have had my 10-year-old son with me and nobody said a thing, therefore I think that store's policy is over the top.
