Are you ok with Biblical Moses being in high school history books printed in Texas and distributed to other states who buy their books?
-
This week, the Texas State Board of Education is going to approve the next history books used to teach Social Studies to high school students. As you probably know, Texas is very conservative and religious. They insist on religion being taught as history, but in Texas and US History books. I think Moses belongs in a Biblical class in their history. Kids will be confused to what history is. Not all high school students are Christians. That means they will be tested. If you use Biblical material, other students are not going to test well if they aren't Christian. Anyway, that information of that book hasn't been approved, so we will see what else Texas is implementing in our history curriculum. Why other states buy our books, I don't know. I do know they do though.

Answer:
I understand that it is not about Moses' existence, but rather about the influence of the mythical figure Moses on the US Founding Fathers. The way this is being done seems debatable. 1) "The existence of Moses as well as the veracity of the Exodus story are disputed among archaeologists and Egyptologists, with experts in the field of biblical criticism citing logical inconsistencies, new archaeological evidence, historical evidence, and related origin myths in Canaanite culture." Source and further information: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moses 2) "Careful analyst by Justine Esta Ellis (a scholar who was not part of the TFN group) finds the strategy of starting with Moses is aimed at presenting the United States as a unique “redeemer nation,” predestined among all others to act out God’s will. Arch-conservative David Barton, who has no historian’s credentials but who nonetheless has had a huge impact on TEKS, maintains that verse after verse from the Bible is quoted “verbatim” in the Constitution. Checking Scripture demonstrates quickly that this is just not so. The language and the ideas do not match. Any professor of history teaches history majors not to make that kind of mistake. But the State Board of Education wanted nothing to do with professors. More than a dozen from Texas colleges and universities volunteered to take part in reviewing texts this past summer. Almost all were turned down." There would be less controversy if they would just allow the Christian bible to be read and taught and then let the readers decide.

It sounds like a nice change from all that news about the Bible being booted out of just about everywhere possible in America!

Moses is a part of history. So no I have no problem with him being in history book. Just as Caesar, Hitler, Us Presidents, King Saul, King George etc.
