What the hay does cross-train mean?

Someone can "cross train" if they're interested and so inclined. If we attempt to coerce that behaviour, no matter how gently, we'll be just as at fault as those who impress gender stereotypes. So let the boys and girls play together. Don't encourage the "boys are yucky" thinking among the girls, or the "girls are yucky" thinking among the boys- that sort of gender competition, even if promoted in innocence, makes empathy for the other sex delayed until sexual interest developes. The greater possibility of ulterior motive at that point makes empathy harder to achieve, dooming us to spend a lifetime trying to understand each other.

I think people do that when they study things like history, philosophy and engineering, where they learn to question and look into other options and possibilities.
