How do I look up topics(hotels) for a research paper?

Any suggestions on a topic for this American Civil War research paper?

• The American Civil War Research Project – Topic Description Paper Assignment By the start of class on January 29, you need to give me a short paper (no more than 3 or 4 pages typed and double-spaced, in 12-point font) that describes the topic you hope to explore for your research paper this semester. In those 3 or 4 pages, here are a few things you need to do: 1) Open by introducing your intended topic and explain why you’re interested in it. I’d like to see some sense that you’re enthusiastic about the topic! 2) Tell me what you hope to prove with your paper. I know you’ll tell me a great story, but try to give me some early indication of what the thesis statement might be. Of course, this can (and almost certainly will) change during the semester, so don’t worry about making this too polished! 3) List all of the sources you’ve been able to track down by then, and describe the sources and what you hope to learn from them. Separate primary and secondary sources. Obviously, you can track down new sources as you work on the paper, but I’d like for you to get off on the right foot and have some sources identified this early. (This list will count as part of the 3 to 4 pages!) Also: Keep in mind that you can certainly use either the McPherson book or the Winik book as one of your sources! (Not the Shaara book though, because it’s a work of historical fiction) A LITTLE ADVICE ON CHOOSING A TOPIC: Remember, the final paper is only supposed to be 8 to 10 pages long. So, you need to pick a manageable topic. Writing about something like “The Life of Abraham Lincoln” or “Black Soldiers in the Civil War” is FAR too big a topic to tackle in a paper this short! Try to focus on something smaller, like the story of a specific battle, a biography of a lesser-known figure from the era, or even a look into Michigan’s role in the war.
