What are the US military doing in South Korea?

Today, does South Korea REALLY need US military presence to defend themselves from a potential North Korean attack?

  • Yeah yeah, China is linked w. North Korea and also has a lot of trade w. South Korea so China won't allow the North to attack etc etc.... I am just asking purely in terms of South Korea's ability to protect itself sans USA.

  • Answer:

A nation of gutless wonders who will always need the U.S. for protection against the North or China in the foreseeable future.

AIAR

Unfortunately, I think it does. North Korea has a huge army, all lined up along the border, with dug-in guns aimed and sighted in on Seoul. It is not beyond the bounds of possibility that the North Korean regime might think it could pull of a sudden surprise attack.

I don't think so.
