Have you seen Ken Dodd live?

3 of 4 Americans who rely on aid programs like food stamps or Medicaid are members of working families. What do you think of this?

  • Never mind welfare to work. Today's world for low-wage earners is welfare and work. A new study from the UC Berkeley Center for Labor Research and Education finds that three out of four Americans who rely on aid programs like food stamps or Medicaid are members of working families. The Center's Ken Jacobs says for those at the bottom, wages alone don't cut it. "You go back for the last 25 years, and real wages have actually declined since 1979," Jacobs says. "At the same time we've seen a decline in the share of workers with job-based health coverage." So, many lean on the safety net to supplement their paychecks. The study finds that about half the workers in fast food, child care, and home healthcare live this reality. http://www.marketplace.org/topics/health-care/most-aid-families-goes-working-families

Welcome to the post-Industrial-Revolution world. This is what happens when the value of human labor approaches zero. We have three alternatives that I'm aware of: 1) Let lots of people die until the supply of labor is brought back into balance with demand so wages can rise. 2) Artificially introduce inefficiency into market economies so more people have to be employed to produce our basic needs. 3) Teh Ebil Socialism (i.e. wealth/income transfers from those who are lucky enough to possess capital or who are able to trade their labor for wealth to those who are not so lucky). Take your pick.

Old School - Doing daily battle with SKOS

Real wages have "actually" declined since 197X (whatever the year was), the man said. Jesus, it aggravates me to no end that so few people know this. It shouldn't be such a damn secret. Every year the government should ask people, "Was the dollar worth more in 1970 or today?" and every person who gets the answer wrong should be paid in 1970's dollars while continuing to pay 2015 prices. Then maybe Boomers will stop bloviating about lazy, self-indulgent Millennials.

i think that statistic is fabricated/manipulated in order to try to push an agenda. i think that number includes SS, unemployment and medicare, which are not entitlement or aid programs, but programs that people have paid into over the years. so the numbers are meaningless.

TonieMoral - is DONE with this shit

Less pay for workers, more pay for CEO's and large shareholders. Productivity is up and wages stagnant. The government tries to help out because that's what it must do to prevent civil unrest...throw the dog a bone politics.

Not surprising at all.

Mister Bromide: Non-Millenial Nothing

I assume that one can live with a job at McDonalds if they live in a boarding house and use a bike or moped or public transportation.. Idk though because I don't have any experience living off $8.25 per hour..

With 51 million people on food stamps I would suspect that the greater majority of them are illegal.

I believe it. The majority of people I know (well enough to know details like that) are receiving either food stamps or at least their children get Medicaid. Even more if you are including SS and Medicare. And yes they all are working.
