How to Make Picture Icons in Photoshop

Answer:
A picture icon is a file ending in ".ico" that you can use to represent a file. When you open the file browser on your computer, the file name shows an icon when you choose the option to "view icons" or "view thumbnails." When you click to a website and see a small image next to the URL in the address bar, that's an icon too. It's very easy to create these icons in Adobe Photoshop. Difficulty: Moderately Easy Instructions Click "File" then "New" to create a new image in Photoshop. Set the size as a perfect square, meaning both the height and width need to be equal. It can be any size, such as 250 by 250 pixels or 400 by 400 pixels, as long as it's a square. Set the resolution to 300 dpi to start. Add your text and images to the icon. Since this will be a very small file, try to limit the content to one or two characters and one easily distinguishable image. For example, you could fill the background with a cat's face and then place your initials on top in bold lettering. Click "Image" then "Image Size" on the main menu. Size the icon down to either 16-by-16 pixels or 32-by-32 pixels. Click "File" then "Save for web." Save the file as a GIF, JPG, or PNG image. The "Save for web" option sizes the file down to a lower resolution yet web-optimized image. Open Windows Explorer (right-click the "Start" menu and select "Explore"). Navigate to the new image file you just saved in the last step in Windows Explorer. Click "Tools" then "Folder Options" on the Explorer main menu. Select the "View" tab and un-check the option that says "Hide extensions" or similar. This will allow you to view the entire file name including the extension. Click "OK." Right-click the image file in Explorer and click "Rename." Change the file extension to ".ico" to create your picture icon file. Tips & Warnings Tip: If you want to use the icon file on your website to display next to your URL address, rename the file as "favicon.ico" and upload this image to the public directory of your website. Wait an hour or so and refresh your website to see the icon display in the web browser URL bar. Warning: These instructions are specific to Windows operating systems.
