How much should the car repairs cost?

Porsche (car company): How much would a used Cayman cost in repairs?

  • I'm car shopping and I want to make sure that I factor in cost of maintenance and repairs when making a purchase. If I were to buy a used Cayman with ~30 to 40k miles, how much should I expect to spend per year on maintenance? How many miles could I expect the car to last for? How would the maintenance of this compare with a Toyota?

OK, so Toyotas are basically toasters. You buy it, you don't have to do hardly any maintenance to it, it just runs and runs and runs. Even really old ones. Change the oil, pay attention to a few other items, and it runs more or less forever, at nearly no cost.If you compare anything - literally, seriously, ANYTHING - to the cost of operating a Toyota over time, the Toyota wins.If that's your mindset, you don't deserve a Porsche.Owning a Porsche is about passion. For the car. For the experience of driving it. For the sound it makes. For the smell of the engine as it comes up to temp. For the tight little smirk as you make a flat 90 degree turn at 45 MPH in a 45 MPH zone just because you can. For never ever turning on the expensive surround sound system because who the fuck wants to listen to that when you've got this magnificent symphony of sound as the engine winds up through the R's....I don't know the specifics on the Cayman, and it wouldn't matter because it's all highly car specific. I'd probably mentally budget something around $2k a year in service and tires, because when I have a Porsche, that's all I drive, and that means a set of tires every year to year and a half. The service intervals are much lower on the newer cars than on the classics, so I think that would probably work. If you have one of the cars with the M87 intermediate shaft bearing issue, and it's not been addressed, that'll get expensive if it goes.  And this is not a car you can service yourself. You need specialized computer gear to do diagnosis and adjustment, so you'll need to find a competent independent shop which has invested in that gear, or you're looking at dealer service only.Good luck.

There are so many variables here, that it's difficult to answer your question.  First, the maintenance cost will eclipse that of the Toyota - although you didn't specify which one.  You also didn't specify which year Cayman, but I would definitely opt for the 987.2 - model year 2009-2012, with the direct fuel injection engine.  Be alert because the base model 2009 Cayman did not have a DFI.  The DFI engine did not have an intermediate shaft (IMS), which was the cause of some issues in earlier cars.  At 30-40,000 miles, if the spark plugs haven't been replaced, they will need to be - cost was about $350 on my 2011 Cayman S.  However, if some or all of the ignition coils need replacing, you could easily double that figure.  Other than that, you will pay for an annual check up - the cost varies and the independent shops charge much less - I would budget $350-500.  The thought that a Porsche will not outlast a Toyota is not justified.  I've seen well maintained 944s with over 300,000 miles going strong. It's all about proper maintenance.

Hmm it would probably be in the thousands. Compared to a Toyota. A Toyota is a lower class manufacturing car company meaning that they use less high end parts like a Porsche. And if something were to happen to the Porsche than the repairs would sky rocket. Also a Toyota would last longer than a Porsche with high mileage. It also depends on what year you buy a cayman. And we are just talking about maintance don't get started on insurance. Just because you can buy the car doesn't mean guy can afford to keep it. But in the end it's up to you. Honestly I would buy a Toyota than later in life maybe when you retire buy a Porsche.
