Does an internship in a company count as work experience?

This question is with respect to IT industry, Right now I'm doing my internship in one of the Fortune 100 company as part of my 2 year Masters degree. Does my one year internship count as work experience? Can I put it in my resume as work experience?

Answer:
Yes definitely, it counts as an experience.According to me any project that you do, adds up to your experience and since this is an internship at some company or something, so it means that your project is not some normal college project..So definitely add this project in you CV. Cheers !!

Though it should be but reality is most(not all) of the IT Companies in India consider internship just as a informal training(or some college work though you may have worked different from course work). So while entering a company for switching to a new, they don't count internship as they only count full time, regular salaried employee.

It is not considered as part of your experience. Primarily because you are not a full time employee. The exposure is limited incomparison to a full time employee. There is no practise to evaluate your performance and neither competency mapping is done. You have to mention it as internship or trainings undergone.
