Separate rupees for India and Nepal?

Why can't India build good relationships with its neighboring nations like Nepal?

  • the following comment is from Nepalis: ------------------------------------------------------- Unless an Indian unnecessary influence can be kicked out from Nepali Institutions, Nepal will experience lack of peaceful, prosper, and democratic nation. India is not the one who create Nepal's system. India once stood for three pillars, then knocked down one pillar, that left Indians policy to two pillars. One by one, Indians are trying to destroy the Nepal's existent. Nepal has more differences than similarities with India. We Nepalis want to make it clear to Indian Bureaucrats In New Delhi, and Lainchaur. We do not like your intervention in Nepali issues. The world knows that India does not have a single good/friendly neighbor. Nepal was once a good neighbor of India, due to the Indian intervention in Nepali issues. Nepal lost the trust of Indians, and began to question the motive of Indians in Nepal? From a plain language understanding, we Nepalis are more concerned of of future than any one else on the earth. It seems that Indians are more concerned about Nepal's future than Nepalis themselves. Mr. Sood, please you ---k get out of Nepal As soon As Possible. We do not like you. Hummm....So, now Nepal is having problems with India? China, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Kashmir....all having problems with India? Must be something  wrong with India? In my humble opinion, India should concentrate on solving its own problems before trying to interfere in other countries. India has 50% child malnutrition rate, and 80% of its population lives in poverty--the highest in the world. India should focus on these problems first! Bullying does no good! It only hurts you! If you bully, other nations don't want to trade with you, and everyone is worse off!

  • Answer:

Any relationship must be mutual. India alone can't control it. However India does share decent relationship with countries like Nepal, Bhutan and Srilanka. Various complicated problems exist with Pakistan, Bangladesh and China. I don't see them being resolved in quick time. I don't mind India having problems with neighboring countries provided innocent people are not killed. Neighboring countries having issues related to many things is quite common these days.

Although there are significant problems in India, which are irrelevant to the question at hand, it is completely false that '' India has 50% child malnutrition rate, and 80% of its population lives in poverty--the highest in the world''.In actuality the poverty rate in India is 21.9%, which is lower than the global average of 24%. Also, in 2013-14 in league with Unicef showed that the proportion of underweight children in India was 29.4%, hence the child malnutrition is nowhere near as bad as it seems. Also, you seem to have been fooled by the media.I will go through the relations with neighbours individually: Bangladesh - we got them their independance in the first place. There have been a few problems in the relationship in recent history but our current relationship under Modi is very strong. Clearly, the huge enclave swap deal and recent economic investment shows that Modi is improving the relationship with our strategic partner and important neighbour. Also, a 30-year treaty has been signed between the two countries over the sharing of the water of the Ganges (1996), which shows the long-term commitment that they both have towards each other, coupled with a key ability to solve mutual problems. Bhutan - . to bolster the strong historical relationship that the Hindu majority nations share they have signed a Treaty of Friendship in 1949, which was recently revised in 2007. Currently, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tata_Power is building a hydro-electric dam. This dam will greatly develop the Bhutanese economy by providing employment, and by selling electricity to India and fulfilling India's burgeoning energy needs. Due to this dam Bhutan's economy grew 20%, the second highest growth rate in the world, also providing India with key renewable energy that it will need in the future, building a strong energy-linked relationship of mutual benefit. Burma - for many years, Indo-Burmese relations were strong due to cultural links, flourishing commerce, common interests in regional affairs and the presence of a significant https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burmese_Indians in Burma. India provided considerable support when Burma struggled with regional insurgencies and has even acknowledged the Junta government, despite huge international uproar about this government at the time. India is one of the only countries that provides the government with weapons and spends millions to modernise and invest in Burmese business. This relationship was strengthened after Cyclone Nargis, of which India was one of the first country to send aid. China - despite some disputes over the borders in Aksai Chin and Arunachal Pradesh, the relationship is now normalised and somewhat strong, with the two countries valuing their economical and cultural ties more than their disputes.Since 2004, the economic rise of both China and India has also helped forge closer relations between the two. Sino-Indian trade reached US$65.47 billion in 2013-14, and hence increasing economic reliance between India and China has also bought the two nations closer politically, with both India and China eager to resolve their boundary dispute. They both work together as they realise mutual gains are highly important, and as they emerge this relationship will only get stronger. Nepal - relations between India and Nepal are close yet fraught with difficulties stemming from border disputes, geography, economics, the problems inherent in big power-small power relations, and common ethnic and linguistic identities that overlap the two countries' borders. However, there are several positives as they have signed a Treaty of Friendship in 1950, and recently Modi has strengthened ties with the nation when he visited, securing key contracts to build hydrological plants worth billions in Nepal, beating out China to the opportunity, and also investing into their economy. There is no embargo between India and Nepal and India is right to object against their constitution as it suppresses the rights of the Indians living there by reducing their representation, and thus it is unfair. Pakistan - over their history there have been huge debate and even 4 wars fought over the state of Jammu and Kashmir, which have weakened the relationship between the two countries. Also, the nuclear arms race that had developed in the 1990's between the two nations didn't help their relationship too much either. However, there are some positives as the bilateral trade between them is greater than $3 billion and also Pakistan switched from the positive trading regime (which listed products that are permissible for trade between the two countries) to a negative list regime (that only bans a few items from trade, but permits the rest) in 2012. Under this, only the import of 1,209 Indian products is barred. India has always as a state policy believed in maintaining a cordial and a friendly relationship with all its neighbours. However, there have been moments when our neighbours have not reciprocated our intentions in a good manner. Lets take a look at a few examples Sri Lanka - Right from the days of its independence, Sri Lanka always had a friendly bent of mind towards Pakistan. May be that was because of the influence that the British had over them. The British back in the days were more pro-Pakistan because the founding members of Pakistan never fought for independence unlike Gandhi, Bose, Bhagat Singh etc. During the 1960's and 1970's when India was at war with Pakistan, Sri Lanka constantly gave naval shipping berthing rights to the Pakistani and the US Navy. India objected to it strongly but they did not listen. What happened as a result? The LTTE was created to counter the Sri Lankans. It drained the Sri Lankans for 30 years before finally eliminating the LTTE. Then again due to India's domestic issues it neglected the relationship with Sri Lanka and China made an entry. They excerted tremendous influence after they supplied Sri Lanka with offensive weapons to fight the LTTE. However India through its intelligence agency was able to replace Mahinda Rajapaksha with a more moderate pro-India government. Bangladesh - Bangladesh owes its creation to India. Had the Indian army not trained or provided support to the Mukti Bahini, Bangladesh would have never won its independence. Due to this India has extremely warm relationship with India. However the internal politics of Bangladesh and the rivalry between Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia has always impacted India. Everytime Sheikh Hasina is elected as the Prime Minister, there is relative peace in India's Eastern borders but when ever Khaleda Zia is elected as the Prime Minister there is a huge flow of illegal weapons, contraband, terrorists into India. There have also been terrorist attacks in India's Eastern cities launched from the terror camps located in Bangladesh. This hot and cold relationship between India and Bangladesh is here to stay I guess. Bhutan - Bhutan is one country with whom we probably have the best of relation in this entire region. They have also helped India to destroy terrorist training camps located inside their country. Nepal - India and Nepal politically shared a very good relationship since a long time. However from the time the communists established a political base, the relationship between the 2 country's have gone south. In my opinion, I will purely blame the Nepalese communist party for this. With a significant influence excerted by China, they are bent upon destroying 100's of years of traditional relationship which the 2 countries have enjoyed. What the Nepalese communist party has done is a total sin for which they cannot be forgiven. Pakistan - I do not want to talk about Pakistan much. I guess we all know that there wont be peace until the Kashmir problem is resolved. Myanmar - Myanmar too was once part of the British India empire. There were many Indians from Bengal, Madras (Now Tamil Nadu) who lived in Burma and made a living. The country could not be part of India due to significant cultural and religious and linguistic differences. I think this was a wise move to keep them as a seperate country. All was well until the late 1950's when the communists from China raised their ugly head. The Indians were driven out from their homes, their businesses were destroyed and houses were set on fire. On top of it, Myanmar permitted the north-eastern rebel groups to form bases in the their country and direct their attacks towards India. Now the question is when India did not cause them any harm, what was the need for the Myanmarese to provide sanctuary to the anti-India rebels? I hope through these explanations you have been able to understand that India wants to have good relationship with its neighbours but local politics in the neighbouring countries have impacted our relationship with them.

No. Bangladesh has good relations and close partners with india but sometimes religion plays a part of bad stuff in our relations. But mostly since 1971 our relations are friendly with exception of Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia. Relations are quite good beetween two countries but border issue are the main problem but that got solved recently. Majority of bangladeshis are quite okay with secularism altough they love their religion Islam
