How to open file using Google drive api?

How much time does Google Drive take to process an uploaded video (any format) so that it can be played on Google Drive (using a browser) when we just click on the file in Drive to play it?

  • When a new video of any format is initially uploaded it shows up in the Drive folders but as soon as you click on it to run it, it doesn't directly open up on the Drive(browser), it gives download option only and online viewing option takes time to directly view the video on the Drive (browser) itself, why is this so?

  • Answer:

As Sam's pointed out already, once your video has finished uploading, the file gets converted into a number of format/codec/resolution combinations behind the scenes to ensure it can be played back correctly on whatever device you're accessing your Google Drive content from. This conversion process takes time and details depend on the type of format/codec your original video was in, how big the file was, what it's resolution is, etc. The same happens when you upload a video to YouTube, it always gets converted and stored in a number of different versions. One thing you can do if you want to speed up the process is to compress your video before you upload it to reduce its file size. Modern codecs such as H.264 or VP8 for video and AAC for audio (and more recent ones like HEVC/H.265 and VP9 for video) are able to compress your file at (almost) no visible or audible quality difference and at the same resolution as the original. Unless you want to store the video on Google Drive in the state it came off the recording device you used, compressing it will make the upload process faster. Also this way you're ensuring that you're uploading your video in a modern format/codec combo that the Google servers can process without any problems that might increase the processing time. It seems that google drive needs time to create smaller versions of the video you uploaded in .flv format, whenever you watch a video that is already processed by google, you'll see options to view the file in different sizes 1080p 720p 480p 360p etc, that means that all those are videos google created for online viewing and that's why it takes a while for the videos to be processed, greetings from mexico. ;)

When file is uploaded, they will do the coversion process in the background. It will take some time because conversion depends on the codec, resolution and media type used in it.

Google Drive gives you control over all of your file types in a single place, including video files. With Google Drive, you can: Sync or upload video files up to 5 TB in size (limited by available storage space) Sync or upload video files in the following formats: .WebM files (Vp8 video codec; Vorbis Audio codec) .MPEG4, 3GPP and MOV files - (h264 and mpeg4 video codecs; AAC audio codec) .AVI (MJPEG video codec; PCM audio) .MPEGPS (MPEG2 video codec; MP2 audio) .WMV .FLV (Adobe - FLV1 video codec, MP3 audio) .MTS View all of your videos at a glance Share videos with other people without ever having to use an email attachment Add caption tracks to your video files. Tips and notes Sync or upload your video in the original format and in the highest quality possible. The maximum resolution for playback is 1920x1080. Audio and video lengths should be the same, audio and video should start and end at the same time. Hopefully this information will help you ;) Thanks Aditya
