What are the job opportunities in India after B.Sc.electronic science?

Should I pursue an online master's in computer science from Georgia Tech by staying in India or pursue an M.S. in CS from Stony Brook University by heading to the U.S. and eventually returning to India?

  • I) Pursuing an online master's in computer science from Georgia Tech by staying in India. II) Pursuing an M.S. in CS from Stony Brook University by heading to the U.S. and doing 2 years in a job there, and return back to India. To give a little background, I pursued my undergraduate studies at BITS Pilani and have been working at Oracle, Bangalore for 3 years. My areas of interest are Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning. Due to some personal circumstances I would have to return back to India. Few sub questions which I expect to be addressed are: 1) Which option is better in terms of advancing my technical knowledge? 2) If I choose to go to the U.S., how would be the opportunities in India once I return? Would I end up in a difficult state because of the scattered work experience?

This is a very good and a very simple question. It is like asking, do I watch a cricket match sitting at home with all the convenience at my finger tips or do I sweat it out in the heat and the noise, but still watch the match at a stadium. Its really straightforward. You should totally get the experience of studying at the university by being there rather than pursuing an online course. The coursework you do is a lot more meaningful when you do it at the university. It is a very personal opinion and the reason why I say this is due to multiple factors. You will understand what is it like to be challenged. Being there will have you juggle your life around with the plethora or work that comes your way. There will not be anyone to assist you with even the smallest of things which is very important. Its a different experience when you have assignments to do, exams to appear and look after your job, but still do your day to day activities. It teaches you walking the fine line and living at the edge. Secondly, you will learn a lot by your own mistakes as well as from the experiences of those around you. The level of interaction is much deeper and gratifying. The interaction with your colleagues, your professors, teaching assistants and just the people you meet randomly. I personally believe that it was this experience that taught me a lot more than just the standalone coursework. You will be nearer to the new advancements and the news in your field. Its like you feel the "buzz" which will only be possible by you beingĀ  there physically. The level of technical discussions and exposure at the university will be unparallel. I can go on and on about the pros of actually studying at a good university v/s distance learning, but I guess the above mentioned should be some of the key highlights. I understand that you will have to return back due to your personal reasons and I respect that, however, I would still encourage you to take the course abroad. Given that the ranking of GTech is above SUNY-SB, however, SB is a great place for CS. I wouldn't really be keen to hear of anyone passing up that opportunity, however, it is you who has to decide. Whatever you choose, I wish you all the very best in your endeavors. Cheers.

I am writing this from the knowledge I gathered during my research for the MS programs in US. Stony Brook is good university, not one of the bests but good. If you are young, and can manage the money or student's loan, it is better to come to US and get on campus degree. On campus degree will give you a student visa with which you can work at least few hours a week after your first semester is over and then save some bucks. The chances you get a job through campus interview are bright and then you can stay in US for year or so to earn back your invested money and go back to India. The OMSCS by Georgia Tech is no doubt one of the best CS programs in US. It has the same quality and challenges as its on campus version. However, you will not get any student visa and it may not be easy (not impossible) to get a job in US after you complete this MS. The OMSCS program seems to be designed for specific audience. The audience is basically the working professionals, who have the potential and desire to get their graduation done but are unable to attend the on campus version due to many reasons ( finance, family responsibilities etc). If you can afford on campus MS and age is on your side, from my personal experience, I would really like to ask you to consider on campus MS at decent university. This could be amazing experience, I can only imagine. Once you get involved in family responsibilities, the road to graduation could become little harder. ( Obviously, its not true for every one, but still)

Hey, I am in your same shoes! 2.5 years at Oracle and terribly confused of whether to go abroad or pursue OMSCS. Thanks for asking. Personally, I feel that the quality of education that we could get from GT's OMSCS will be at par with their on campus. But then I agree with Ankit that we would miss a lot of exposure, which we will get on campus. This is my take: Pro - Quality Education form GT - 7000 USD - Need not break the comfort zone at Oracle - You decide what and when to study Con - You miss the on-campus experience - Its surely gonna be tough to maintain a work-study-life balance
