Can Uber catalyze the transition of cars from gasoline-powered cars into electric cars, by reducing the number of people who own cars?
-
It doesn't have electric cars yet, but maybe the day will come. and if the day comes, then could the transition come faster than if people were left to their own devices?

Answer:
The answer to this question lies almost entirely in legislation. Uber (and others) are in conflict with the Taxi industry, and the Taxi industry pays tax and license fees to governments. Uber can do nothing if the legislation prevents it. Legislation is also a fundamental driver behind the transition to electric cars because of green subsidies. Legislation is also relevant to Uber's patent rights in that many businesses can emulate Uber, but Uber has patented the idea. This means that Uber could obstruct other businesses attempting to provide similar services (A negative for transition). Patents are a significant part of the value of Uber. Electric cars are inherently more suitable for commuting in cities than for holidays in remote areas. Legislation plays a very significant role for families wanting to purchase a car for both purposes: Currently it would make sense to have 2 cars for 2 purposes, but the cost of licensing and insurance makes this prohibitive for many families, so they buy one big gasoline car. Uber would have a major impact in reducing the usage of the gas guzzler here, but it would also help to legislate to encourage people to own an electric vehicle for commuting. In the current environment, the catalyst for the transition to electric cars is therefore legislation. This situation is temporary though because electric cars will become cheaper than gasoline cars and cost alone will be the driving catalyst. When this happens the transition will be very rapid. Self-driving cars will also be a major catalyst for transition to electric cars. Uber is very well positioned to take advantage of this technology, but again legislation is the major problem obstructing the use of self-driving cars. My prediction is that when this happens, Uber will become the giant that it is destined to be. Hope they don't become greedy along the way.
