Why does my website rank so poorly in Google search results?
-
I'm a private tutor and Google used to put my website http://www.dotmaths.com on the first page if you typed "maths tutor harrogate". Now I'm at the bottom of page 2. Page one has big tutoring companies on it, so I can understand why I'm not ranked so highly, but it also has two other private tutors' websites. My site is loaded with content -- a blog that I update regularly, downloadable materials and so on. The other two have very simple, three or four page sites. So why do I rank so poorly in search? Is it because Google knows I've paid for Adwords in the past and it's scaring me into doing it again? Is it because their domain names both have the words maths, tutor and harrogate in them? (Is that all it takes to shoot up the Google rankings?) It feels very unfair that I put a lot of effort into making a site that Google seems to ignore.

I'm really sorry that you're feeling this way, but there are actually a lot of factors that determine your website's rankings. Aside from your content (which is really good), Google takes into consideration your web design and of course, the links pointing to your site. Anyway, it might just because your opponents putting more effort into their SEO - this is one thing I didn't really see in your website. Keywords are far and few in between. Aside from which, the images on your "My students" part needs a few improvements - you may need to put individual file names instead of jumbled numbers and letters. Anyway, I really salute you because you are doing a noble undertaking. Math is never an easy subject, and it's my weakness btw. I recommend that you try contacting an SEO company, the jointplan.co.uk in order to discuss your options. Good luck and I hope you will be ranked well soon!

There is a lot to take in to consideration when it comes to staying competitive in pageranking - Check the simple things first: -Keywords -Is your content updated frequently? Is the content engaging? -Look at your Cached site on Google and be sure that if you *have* made updates Google can identify that these changes have been made. If they can't be identified, why? - Be sure to label image tags and keep in mind that the following content is very difficult for Google crawlers to identify: Javascript, AJAX, Flash, Images, Videos, and iframes. So yes in summary there are A LOT of things that can be hurting your rank right now so feel free to contact me for further information if the brief basics don't help. -@NeighborhoodSEO

Invest into an SEO expert advice. Google keeps changing their page ranking algorithms from time to time so that people cannot trick their systems. There are SEO marketing full time jobs present in the industry to make sure top brands stay at the top when google searched. The truth though unfortunate is that google does drive a lot of marketing/advertising business.

I looked at you site...you also need a sitemap (gives info to search engines about pages in your site). I'll tell you the easiest way to be ahead with all these ranking stuff.....get Wordpress...then add SEO plugin (so much easier). Make site engaging and update it regularly. Add tutorials or little videos so that they are useful to your students like how to solve a quadratic equation etc.

I saw the answers so far - all seem to point out that just having good content to help your readers is not enough and you need to do lots of other things (SEO etc) not relevant to your or your readers goals and needs in order to survive. The fault appears to be more with the search engine that it cannot recognize great content. Is Google so powerful that we need to do its way to survive ? If I were in your place, I will try to please the King but only do those changes that do not affect readers expectations from your website.
