What are 5 to 10 things we can do that would really help people in Haiti?

Long story short, "Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime". Stop giving and start teaching them how to do it.

100% agree with Lucio. A lot of locals don't have the confidence to do their own work because there hasn't been much opportunity.  Further, there are a lot of aid going to Haiti with restrictions that aren't helping. For example, empowering women is well and good but I know plenty of men who take care of village boys.  Should they not have help too?  Historically, Haiti hasn't had the opportunity in government to make decisions that would empower its self, either.  For example, Haitian government love Hugo Chavez due to the tense relationship that the US and Venezuela have, we've had to curb some enthusiasm.

As a visitor to Haiti last year, let me add my list. Stable political climate: The history of Haiti is made up of missed opportunities, many because of coups and other egoistical political figures. There needs to be stability. Skill transfer: Instead of giving them everything on a silver platter, transfer knowledge, build confidence, and allow them to do things themselves. Historically many countries have interfered in too many things, which has only resulted in them loosing confidence. Education: There are a lot of non-profits there in this sector. Contribute to them. Tourism: Would really give them exposure, and source for income. Law and order: This is very important for a stable country. They already have a good enforcement team, but they need to get more people in this department. At present it is woefully undermanned. That is my list folks.

1. primary education (public or private) 2. secondary education (public or private) 3. free teacher intensive training programs 4. affordable school books 5. clean free water 6. national agricultural strategy for internal and export 7. business incubation with micro-credit 8. national policy to develop tourism and export industry 9. a government elected by Haitians 10. free trade zone Export Processing Zone

Help Haiti without benefiting from it Stop the U.S.A. media from spreading lies about Haiti Government and Haitians Stop  foreign people, Diaspora from using Haiti economy weakness such as using Haitians girls for sex for money,  sex for immigration paper,  which only  bringing diseases such as AIDS, CHOLERA, etc... into Haiti. Stop turning Haitian against Haitian because of same reason above, which only bring crimes into Haiti, such as kidnapping, guns into young Haitian people.  It's all a foreign ideas.  Stop! Turn Haiti into a U.S.A. state only to give it same economy privilege each state has, BUT without imposed none of the dictator/ authoritarian U.S.A. laws in Haiti
