How do I make an Application Stand out?

John S. Knight Journalism Fellows: How did you make your application stand out?

  • I'm working on my application for the 2014-15 John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships and I was wondering how previous fellows managed to stand out from all the other applicants.

  • Answer:

Julien, I was as open and honest as I could be with my application. I also had a trusting editor who was brutal about taking out extraneous material! It sounds cheesy - but be yourself. The selection is made based on who you are and your experiences, as much as it is about the project proposal. Best of luck to you! Shazna

Hi Julian, I'm a current Knight Fellow  - I'm glad you're thinking of applying. If you want to focus on journalism innovation and applied thinking, it's a great place to do it. I focused my application on 1) Why I wanted to come to Stanford to do the Fellowship (including "why Stanford in particular" - look at what Stanford does uniquely and what it does best to get some sense of what Stanford could do for you) 2) Why my project is important/necessary 3) Why I'm the person to work on this project 4) What "journalism" means to me, specifically in my career so far I don't know about standing out, but if you make sure all of that is included, and it's well written, you'll be in good standing. I hope that helps! Andrew Losowsky

Hey Julien, I believe there were 300 applications for the 20 John S. Knight Fellowship spots this year. And while I wasn't privy to the proposals from other hopefuls, or the alchemy behind the selection process -- do reach out to the JSK committee, they're kind wizards-- I can briefly tell you my approach. I identified a problem - shrinking reporting on our food system.  I have food journalist credentials. And food is the new rock 'n roll, IMHO. So I made a passionate, persuasive case for my POV. And I attempted to do what is crucial to all good journalism - I told interesting stories relating to my background and proposal. I hope this helps! And on November 19 the program is hosting a webinar on making a strong Knight Fellowship application, details here: http://nabjdigital.wordpress.com/2013/11/12/conference-call-how-to-become-a-knight-journalism-fellow/ Keli Dailey John S. Hi Julian, The Knight Fellowships invest in people, not only in projects. I would suggest you craft a compelling and inspirational story that will make you an interesting addition to the group- both your personal and professional journey, it is up to you to weave both together and make your story worth reading. You should also be able to articulate your past experiences in a way that highlights your potential, and "show don't tell" what are the values and principles you live by as a journalist and as a future innovator. In other words: Story-tell. The experience is life-changing, and this is in huge part thanks to the Knight Fellows themselves. Good luck! Mariam, Knight Fellow 2013
