What online computer course will better benefit me?

How do I overcome the fear that "this thing will not benefit me"?

  • I want to learn a computer language, so I downloaded some tutorials and started learning. After doing 9-10 lectures I dropped the course for some very strange reasons like "I can't do this, this course is obsolete, this is very difficult etc" but I started it again after 8 months. In those 8 months, I got several projects (including two big projects) to work on same technology/language I was learning and I cursed myself each time I got new project :| This April (when I started the course again) I find out that the course is missing several important topics (again after reaching lecture 10), so I searched for new material and wasted another 3 weeks. At that time I was very excited and planning to complete the course within few weeks but the excitement and the desire to learn left as soon as I got complete course. I have missed a number of good opportunities, gone through very hard times, wasted two years, lost thousands of dollars, and all these things created a 'thing' called 'fear' in me that "the new language/technology/anything I'll learn will not benefit me".

Been there, pal. You could try learning on your own without courses, and without... learning. Well, not exactly. But the way I tend to learn, being royally unable to sit through courses for this reason, is to have a project in mind that I'd like to do and to start doing it. Then google around on how to do specific tasks as they come up. You can also start with a simpler language. It sounds like you may have been starting with something more involved. You could start with something like PHP to get used to general programming concepts and then other things can follow. All the languages are basically the same. Okay that's not true. But it is kinda. Once you know one, learning another is generally much much much easier.

Instead of worrying what benefit it may bring, why not appreciate the change it has brought to you?

Is it possible to learn it with people as opposed to on-line? I've found that when I want to learn something new, having a person there helping me is the best way. This is an insufficient answer but It's the best I can do.

Fear of unknown is your worst enemy. You seems to me a passionate person but got entangled into a series of unwanted doubt's . Get a mentor or try to understand the fact that every effort will not yield you results and similarly you can't tap each opportunity. But you surely grow in stature, ability and the skill set if you learn every new lesson passionately. It may not benefit you in the end or immediately in a single discipline or where you intended it to be but it helps you to groom and helps you in time to come but may be in other discipline spanning any aspect of your professional or personal life. Lastly pursue it with full faith and renewed energy provided you missed out on a couple of opportunities which at least provide some evidence .

By questioning yourself as to Why the hell should this benefit me? I am learning for the sake of learning itself Calculating benefits does no good as the benefits which you perceive at the beginning may not remain the same after you complete. So the bottom line is "if you want to learn some thing, just learn" and not for the sake of benefit but for the very act of learning itself. You may perceive that by learning something you either gained something or may be you didn't but whatever it is it has built you, the new you. Cheers:)
