Are there Career Choices for Talented & Educated Convicted Felons?
-
I have a question that I need some direction for answers to that I haven't come across in the past in my own consulting business... What happens to a person who has had a brilliant career - military experience within the Intelligence Analysis sector, Bachelor's and Master's in Business Management and Administration, a high level position in the banking industry as a financial consultant and mortgage broker - and then gets convicted for a domestic dispute (in which the witnesses are coerced, then after the person takes a plea to avoid jail-time, the witnesses then recant their testimony). Can anyone suggest some reasonable and valid career choices - since the career this person was in before is not longer available to them because of the circumstances? This person works in the 'white collar world' and has made attempts to get the conviction overturned. This person is extremely well-educated, has a brilliant career progression, and has reached the depths of despair on what to do now. What type of business can this person work in and still make the type of money they may have made in the past? What type of management position or entrepreneurial pursuit can this person make on their own merit, experience, and skill sets? Who do you know that was in the same position that you can point to publicly that 'made it' after an unfair conviction of this nature? Thanks in advance!

Answer:
I've helped a number of felons return to high paying jobs (there's even a case study of one on my website), and it mostly boils down to how they carry themselves, how they explain any lengthy employment gaps, and whether they resolve the inner issues related to the mistakes they made. Tim Allen (lead actor in Home Improvement) is my favorite reference on this topic. Just a year after being paroled for drug trafficking (where he snitched and received a three to seven year sentence to avoid the life imprisonment he was facing) he began his entertainment career as a television comedy writer. A few years later (while he was still on parole) his acting career took off. He just doesnât carry the air of an ex-con, and thatâs the biggest obstacle/challenge that ex-cons face. Any employment field that doesnât require a background check across the board (security, education, banking, etc.) remains an available option. Most of my clients have been lucky in finding employers who simply donât check their background, but the couple of folks who were checked just made sure they were prepared to answer questions with grace, humility, and self-respect. Iâm open to chatting further offline if youâre interested. (PS: If the witnesses in the case you referenced have all recanted, thereâs a damn good chance a full pardon can be secured. Just a thought.)

I often come across this question. I work with felons many of whom are college graduates. Felons can pretty much do any job. The question is, does the job require any type of certification or license? Depending on the nature of the conviction, they may not be able to hold certain certifications or licenses. One strategy I offer is to apply for open positions using a resume with a well written cover letter. Often when a felon applies this way, the question of a criminal record may never come. Always be prepared with a great response in case it does. You can ask me a question about getting a job with a criminal record at my blog: http://www.howfelonscangetjobs.com
