How do I sing in my mixed voice?

Is it better to sing in chest voice or to used mixed voice?

  • I prefer to sing lower notes in mixed voice rather than use chest voice because I prefer the sound... do musical theatre singers do this or not?

    It is "Mixte voice" not mixed voice. Which means bone conducted sound with air conducted sound and has nothing to do with your chest!!!! Lower notes will always have more air conduction as the frequency of vibration requires "air before tone' resonance. Music theatre requires greater projection and more bone conducted sound. I think you need a qualified voice coach to teach you correct terminology and technique of voice. In fact, the term chest voice was deemed incorrect in 1932 when we realised through technology that it is anatomically impossible.

Cherallison is right about anatomy, but let's just keep the terminology for convenience sake. First of all, you use ALL of your voice as needed. You don't pick either I use my "chest" register or I use my "head" voice, or I use my "mixed" register. You use EVERYTHING. The whole purpose of those descriptions is to help the singer to utilize their full vocal potential in a way that does not strain the voice. You need to find a voice teacher that can teach you how to "belt" (which is what you are probably thinking of) without ruining your vocal cords. However, even "belters" --those TRAINED Broadway singers (not Disney channel pop singers) will also utilize mixed and head registers--often in the same song. If you haven't noticed them doing this, then they are doing it correctly. You aren't supposed to hear some weird shift so that it sounds like one person has left off singing and another person came in to finish.
