I think it would be fair to say that most people in the western world know who Beethoven is. His chorale symphony (9th) has the Ode To Joy chorus which most people are familiar with, even if they know of little else that he composed. My personal favourite is his Missa Solemnis.

Of course we know :D Today majority of people don't listen to classical composers like Beethoven, Wagner, Mozart or Chopin, but I think their names are known by almost everyone.
