I'm 20 and want to learn piano. Should I buy a 66 key piano keyboard, non touch sensitive, as my first piano?

Answer:
"I am somewhat poor" - - I'm sorry to hear that; but you would be much better off with a real piano with 88 keys - it's the best way to 'learn the ropes'. See if you can find a decent second-hand piano. Electronic keyboards are alright if you only want to mess around, playing by ear and so on; but if you're serious, then an acoustic piano is certainly preferable.

I totally disagree with Stephen. You can buy a decent used piano for around $500 and it will probably last longer than a cheap new keyboard. I would not buy a used keyboard; they can need expensive repairs. If the one you mention is the best you can do, you can learn the notes and reading music on it, but your fingers will not be getting trained properly.

Don't waste your money. If you really want to learn piano, a full size keyboard with touch sensitivity is the way to go. Until you can afford a real piano, you should try to find something that approximates one as close as possible.

Stardate 4/15/14 Update 2: I just popped into a Guitar Center to check out new keyboards for $500 or less. They have all sorts of options… 61, 76 or 88 keys that are synth action, semi-weighted or weighted. That means a used keyboard, 10 years old with an original retail price of $2,000, in perfect working condition has a current street value well under $500. An acoustic baby grand is totally cool, the inner workings of any style acoustic are a thing of wonder and mechanical beauty. The size and maintenance costs associated with acoustics puts them far out of reach for less affluent people. For generations, many classically trained players and teachers have had an elitist attitude towards the poor. In their current incarnation they say, “Let the poor save their pennies and never start playing until they can afford what is proper.” It’s just another royal way of telling the starving poor to eat cake. With the classically trained elitists in charge of the most common form of piano lessons, and those classical methods cutting a swath of destruction through society; producing far more non-players than players, there are a lot of barely used keyboards just sitting around gathering dust. The best advice for the financially strapped poor who want to learn piano is for them to find a good deal on a used digital or electronic keyboard. Classical elitists will, of course, see things differently. Stardate 4/15/14 Update 1: On the planet called “Earth” there is a dirty little secret about acoustic pianos… they need to be TUNED!! !!! And tuning an acoustic on a regular basis costs MONEY! So you might want to post another question about the tuning schedule you’ll need to stick to after you move that $500 money pit known as an upright piano into your apartment. Another thing that happens on the planet known as “Earth” is there are these events called “Rock Concerts” and lots of the really rich dudes that play a piano-like thing at the “Rock Concerts” have spent lots of Earth money on a fancy electronic keyboard. And many of the fans of those really rich “Rock Concert” dudes buy keyboards so that they can try to be “Rock Stars” too. And when those fans of the really rich “Rock Concert” dudes sell their old keyboards they sell them for a lot less Earth money than they paid for it new. And since an electronic keyboard never needs to be TUNED it can cost a lot less Money in the long run. Update 1 over and out. The rule of thumb in the modern world is NEVER start with an acoustic piano unless you’re rich enough to waste money. You’re poor so don’t even think about an acoustic. You’ll get the most bang for your buck with a used electronic keyboard. The more keys the better but you can get by with a 61 key. Touch sensitivity is more important than the number of keys so you should hold off until you find a deal on a touch sensitive keyboard. You won’t stick with piano for long with a light-up with no touch sensitivity. Digital pianos with weighted keys might be an option if you could find a great deal on a used one. You might even come across a free digital. I drove past a free electronic organ just the other day. A 15 year old digital can still work great but it’s practically worthless in terms of its dollar value. If somebody has an old digital taking up floor space and nobody ever plays the thing they might give it to you for free. There are tons of used keyboards for sale. Music stores have trade-ins for sale and lots of people have an electronic keybord sitting around the house and nobody can play the thing. Check out your options for used keyboards in your area. Thrift stores, yard sales … look anywhere where people try to get rid of stuff they no longer want and you’ll likely find a keyboard here and there.
