  • Answer:

Both are good careers if you are able to find a job as a new grad without paid experience. So many new grads have been unable to find a job due to lack of paid experience and the areas they live in do not offer programs for new grads to get experience. Some places do have those programs, but many dont. So while deciding your career path, look in your area and teh surrounding areas (or areas you wish to live in) and see what the employment is like for new grads. Look at job listings at hospitals and other medical facilities as well as dental facilities. You can also contact some of the employers and see if they offer programs for new grads to get experience. That is what I did when i first decided nursing. Due to the outlook, I changed my major to radiology which has good pay as well and you get to work with computers and patients. In my area there are many openings for people in that field with less than 1 yr exp, many in my area just want you to have teh license and my education from an accredited college. So, make sure you research both fields thoroughly, especially jobs available for new grads.

the dental field pays more if you're looking at being a dental hygienist (a DH w/ a bachelor's degree in my city can earn between $75k to $95k depending on whether s/he is working full or part time). a dentist can earn $120k & up. the hours are considerably better as well. if you prefer to be more hands on then you may like nursing better. (I see nursing as more of a calling than anything else. some people have a real need to minister/ render aid to others & if you are one of those people then this field may be more of what you're looking for.) but if you do go the nursing route then I recommend you look into becoming a Nurse Practitioner as opposed to a RN. again it's a money issue. Nurses tend to be relatively underpaid for the amount of schooling they are required to get vs. the amount of physical labor they are expected to engage in, plus if you're working in a hospital then you're working crazy hours & a Nurse Practitioner tends to earn more money & is usually part of a private medical practice with regular hours. you're less likely to experience burn out that seems to be a risk with a lot of nurses.

I personally think nursing. Just because there are so many different jobs and opportunities in nursing. Dental is still a good career path, but if you love to help people I would chose nursing.
