  • Answer:

In Catering my husband regularly worked a 16 hour shift. He was asked to do it and he did. There are various occupations in the UK where shifts are very long. Your friend was asked and he did it willingly, he could have refused, so what's the problem now. He can always say no the next time. UK

There is a maximum number of hours per week that your employer can MAKE you work. However you may CHOSE to work more. Your friend chose to work more so cannot complain. He can say no in the future.

Some jobs are 24/7 like in home caregiver, no law about how long an adult can work. If it is child labor the company should know the laws or not hire children.

If you're in the UK then the rules on this are set by the Working Time Regulations. You can read about the working time regulations on http://www.simplifythelaw.co.uk. To go straight to the page on Working Time Regulations check out http://snipurl.com/28qaewv The law can be a bit more complicated then simply saying "it's lawful/not lawful to work a certain number of hours in a shift" there are rules about how much time you have off between shifts and whether that long shift was part of a pattern.
