  • Answer:

Degrees today are a dollar and a dream. A dime a dozen. Dare to be duped. Maybe you can change your approach. Do you know your goal? If you can write it down on paper in one sentence then do it. Keep applying to jobs. (That's a job in itself). Work it. In the meantime go to http://directsellingnews.com/index.php/view/2014_dsn_global_100_list#.U2wvZMnD_qB and observe the top 5 of The Top 100 List. Contact each individual company and ask who, where and when is their next orientation, nearest you. Attend each and finally choose the one company that fits you best. The only degree you'll need to show is your PhD in Common-Sense! : )

Often schools have job placement assistance, but not every one of them. Be sure to check with any office there. There are entry level jobs in Computer Science in the Chicago Area http://www.indeed.com/jobs?q=Entry+Level+Computer+Science&l=Chicago%2C+IL You need to check web sites with job listings and with companies that have departments supporting computer science. It would also be to your advantage to be willing to move to another city. That greatly opens the job prospects. People that are unemployed or underemployed, I believe are tied to a small geographical area. Most people recently graduated from a college or university are no longer tied to a geography, unless you are already with a life partner. Anyone trying to look within 30 miles, is looking at a smaller job market and every job has both local and national competition. With 120 jobs listed Chicago at Indeed (check many sites), Raleigh-Durham shows 70, New York Shows 193, Santa Clara, CA 138, etc. The question is also whether your focus is hardware or software. http://www.bls.gov/ooh/computer-and-information-technology/home.htm Software tends to have more US opportunities, and if you are hardware, there are fewer centers of competence in the US, such as Silicon Valley area and Huntsville, AL, etc. You do need to keep applying and being rejected for a job opening is not being nasty to you personally. There are many applicants, and they choose who to interview. There are placement firms, but generally not as many at entry level. There should also be a state employment agency, and city and state employment in the field. Look at all options.

Apply anyways. No harm done. You may have a skill or personality trait that appeals to them. What a company advertises for is their ideal worker. Many times though they don't get the perfect applicant. So I would apply you never know.

Prior to 2007 and the Great Recession, employers would hire college who had little or no experience. but 2008 on, employers can take their pick and consider a five year experience as a prerequisite to any job. I'm surprised your college didn't have on-campus hiring. Keep trying and good luck.

They are looking for someone who can fill a position with a proven track record who will not require a lot of training to get up to speed. Look at the projects that you would be working on and being to learn what is necessary to do those projects. You may need to do volunteer for a while to get some experience. Also it would be helpful to meet people who are working in the field. They can help for a number of reasons. They can help you learn what you need to know, they have experience and they may know of positions that are not so strict about the requirement of 5 years of experience.

Keep looking, but in the meantime, apply to those jobs. Often they will settle for less, and sometimes don't even expect that much experience but want to weed out people who don't have the confidence to apply. I graduated with a comp sci degree and found an awesome job fairly easily. Best of luck.
