I had a 'non-face' as my profile picture for a while, you know, that grey head on a blue background? Of course, I added the Fez to the outline. (Fez's are cool). People who know me thought it was great. It doesn't matter to your friends what photo you use, as long as they know it's you. The side view is fine, as long as it's not taken from criminal 'mug-shots', that tends to drive some people away.
