  • Answer:

start in karting. relatively affordable and it will show if you have any talent and enough determination. if you start winning national championships, you have talent and can try to pick up a sponsor to help you get further. then again, 17 is blaady late, mate.

Find a race track near you. Watch several races. Note which cars seem to always be contenders. Get a copy of the rules for the most amateur division. It might be easier to buy your first car, rather than build one. Buy the best car available at the most reasonable price. And try to buy one similar to that of the front-runners. You might have to wait till the end of a season. You might also find that the seller may want to keep his engine. It would be best to find a mechanic with experience in racing. In the U.S. amateur divisions (at least in oval track) crew members donate their time. Try to find sponsorship of some kind if at all possible. Try to learn as much as you can. There are many, many books available. Concentrate first on trying to make the car "handle". Handling means that the car can make turns losing the least speed.
