  • Answer:

International relation is probably one of the best degrees to have. International relations, Asian studies, Arabic studies, Government, Political Science, and Foreign affairs are the top degrees. Why? These are government related degrees. An MA in Arabic studies will land you a job earning over $250,000 with no experience. With all due respect to science majors, these degrees have better job security. However, in order to get employed by the government, you must attend government job fairs. CIA, NSA embassies, and government related sectors recruit college students at universities. Also in your senior year, register for an internship course. Speak with the head of the department. Use your university as your guide. They will assist you better.

In the UK these subjects are non vocational degrees. Non vocational degrees are the ones that you study for your own interest only and that do not lead to any work. It is quite possible that you will get the same job after your non vocational degree as you would have got had you never been to university. If you want to work in the subject that you have studied at university you have to study for a vocational degree.

Seriously, if you want a stable job, none of those majors will help. You're better off getting an engineering or computer science degree. Thats gives you something a lot more marketable than sociology and int'l relations. I love sociology and political science as subjects. However, in the real world they are practically useless. Even if you want a government job, they will prefer someone who concrete technical skills that can actually solve problems. I would recommend you get an engineering degree or a computer science degree. Do sociology and international relations as a minor. Get good grades and do an internship. When you graduate, you will a lot more marketable. A few years after working, go back and do the degrees in sociology and international relations. By then you'll have a solid economic base and will be able to pursue your dreams.
