Answer:
Of course they appreciate a visitor to their country speaking their language, or at least attempting to. I would imagine that that waitress was a bit impatient because restaurants tend to be busy and it's really time-consuming to be helping people read the menu, and things get a bit backed up. I have found French people to be generally reasonably friendly. However, you will get some jerks, that's a given. Law of averages and all that. But if you are friendly, polite, have a sense of humour and a positive attitude, and good manners, this is helpful no matter where you go.

Hi! I am english and I have been living in France for 35 years. In fact, I have married a french girl. French love above all that a foreigner make an effort to speak french. This is THE condition to be welcome everywhere and to make friends gallore. No matter the quality and the level of your french? The effort only is appreciated. Even, the worst it is, the best you will be appeciated, because french have really the feeling that you make a real effort. In other words, what they hate the most is the behaviour of a person who shows a profond contempt and do not even try to speak french. Live in France? This is the best country I have known. Life is sweet here, and people so friendly! Welcome in France, welcome in paradise!

Don't expect too much and you won't be too disappointed. Paris is like NY, some pretty friendly and others pretty rude maybe. Like here the people in smaller towns and certain areas will be phenomenal and other areas not so much. Hang around where they are more friendly, that's all. You might find that you have a lot of fun with other tourists as they will have time on their hands also while most people are way too busy and very French. Get to know a few before making a judgment of the whole population and yes a warm attitude goes far sometimes.

I think people should not be seen only as citizen of a country. They shouldn't be judged on the basis of their nationality. When you give with love, you receive the same. You wont be judged because you are English. There are a lot of English people living in that country, take your aunt for example.Don't worry, you are going to love it in France. Now that you are adapt to your thoughts and your way of thinking, you understand the French people more. I've never been to France, but I hope you enjoy your stay. And I'm sure the waitress had other things going on in her life.
