    Ear popping isn't generally painful. You actually want your ears to pop because that is what eliminates the pressure that builds up with altitude changes. If they don't pop, that pressure would cause a lot of pain. Those ear plug things can help with the pressure build-up, but they don't necessarily prevent popping. They prevent pain. If you want to try them, you can find them at most pharmacies. You can also encourage popping by chewing gum, yawning, drinking, and otherwise swallowing.

Oh please, ear popping is not painful, and I travel regularly on domestic and international flights.

Also called AirPhones, I think, or AirPlugs. Ear popping is just startling and not really painful. However, if your ears do not pop or otherwise equalize the pressure from the ground to the less pressure inside the airplane, you are in for the most excruciating pain you can feel and it does not stop fast. Your ear drum is being stretched beyond its natural limits and it hurts more than you can imagine. The people who do not have this problem will look at you like you are a crybaby and crazy, including the dopy air attendants and people like C M C. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT hold your nose and blow because that will drive throat mucus into your middle ear and make it worse. Try yawning, chewing, swallowing and having a mint in your mouth to encourage swallowing. My pain is so great and often that I had small tubes put in my eardrums, no pain after in, and that works wonders.
