What is Muay Thai?

What's the difference between Muay Thai done in the UFC compared with the Muay Thai in Thailand?

  • Are they the same? Or are there certain techniques not allowed in UFC?

  • Answer:

The do not just fight until the fighter is unconscious. There are rules which earn points not only on strikes but also on grappling skills and technique. There are some rules in Muay Thai that are allowed in Muay thai but not the UFC and besides that the Muay Thai in Thailand is far more ferocious than what is limited in the UFC. Muay thai is the national sport there, it is famous and something that people pride themselves on. MMA like it does with all traditional arts is takes away what it can use for the cage and discards the rest of it. For the people saying Muay Thai is not a traditional style well it certainly is, it can trace its lineage back many centuries through Muay Boran.

Muay Thai in UFC, fighters are trained in that style of kickboxing. In Thailand, Muay Thai fighters fight in a roped ring instead of a cage and they fight until their opponent is unconscious. UFC is actually safer. IMO

It is the same art, muay thai in Thailand and muay thai in MMA. You just have to adjust your tactics because MMA has a ground component to it. Muay thai in Thailand is nothing short of brutal. There are 10-12 year old kids fighting harder than the guys you see on TV. It's just non stop leg kicking. That's another thing from what I can spot. They use a lot more leg kicking in muay thai than in MMA.
