First, a CJ major is a worthless degree, if you want to minor that is ok but the department that you may go to is going to teach you everything you need to know and pay you for it. Get a major in something that you can actually use if you decide not to go into law enforcement or something else happened. J.W. gave you some really good advice in how to pick a major and do a few ride-alongs. You don't have to be a big guy but you need to be able to take care of yourself so while you may hate to work out, just remember that your physical condition, or lack of it, may directly affect your physical health, not just for fighting (if need be), but dealing with the stress of the job. If you don't like to work long hours, that could also be a problem, shift changes, midnights, court, criminal investigations/follow up, etc... You need to find out more about what law enforcement officers really do. If you are under 20 years old, join a law enforcement explorer post, work security at your college, do ride alongs, or talk to seasoned police officers, not your professors, who will tell you what the job really entails and do a lot of research. If you aren't sure, find something else. If your school has a ROTC program, you could also apply for that. The military, especially as an officer, is also a very good way for you to go. This will give you experience in a field like intelligence, linguists, military police corps, or a variety of other fields where you can better use your motivation and education to make a difference.

Don't let your size prevent you from trying to become a police officer. You don't have to like to work out. However, you probably should try to add some muscle. Regardless of size, officers should have good communication skills, they should be as physically fit as they can, they should be well trained in officer survival skills and tactics, and should know when and how to use their equipment. Consider trying to do some ride-alongs with a couple police departments. There are many different law enforcement officer jobs that you could try to get. Conservation officer, constable, deputy sheriff, game warden, humane law enforcement officer, marshal, park ranger, probation officer, and special agent are some other job titles that you could consider. Consider local, state, and federal law enforcement officer jobs. You don't have to major in criminal justice. Most law enforcement agencies that require applicants to have college don't require any particular fields of study. There are many majors that are good for law enforcement officers and people that want to become law enforcement officers. Accounting, communications, computer science, a foreign language, and psychology are some examples. When choosing a major, consider what you might want to do if you decide not to become a law enforcement officer or if you can't become a law enforcement officer. It is great that you are planning on getting a college degree. Getting a college degree is one of the best things that you can do. Make the most of your time in college. Get the highest grade point average that you can, participate in a couple extracurricular activities, get a good internship, do some regular volunteer work, don't do anything illegal, and maintain a good reputation. Best of luck!

There are other ways to use this major and not be a police officer. I personally would like someone like you, who seems to have pure motives, not wanting power over people, to be a cop. You don't have to decide today exactly what job to apply for. Have you searched what variety of jobs look for the degree you are working on? You may find something that is way better for you.

Can you switch majors. Even if you decided to eventually become police, one major is as good as another.
