One or two units do patrol in large conurbations but very rarely do they have to respond to the usual mundane police work. If they do, their weapons are secured in the vehicle. The unit respond to any reports of a firearm being found as they have to be identified and made safe by an AFO. They also take part in various operations, drugs raids etc, but they don't happen very often. Training takes up some time, as does maintenance of equipment although they do have a civilian armorer to do the main task. Given that UK police as a whole only fire about ten shots a year and the moment you fire in anger you're investigated , life on the ARV is not the glamorous gun-toting lifestyle many kids asking how to apply on here think it is, a great deal is intensely boring.
