When was the transcontinental railroad finished?

When finished, how long did the Transcontinental Railroad last?

  • I'm doing a research report and have looked everywhere for this information!!!

  • Answer:

Not sure what you mean 'How long did it last'. The basic idea is still at work today, but those physical tracks were pulled-up & replaced years ago. Rail Road tracks have a limited life span, depending on how much they are used.

The original route from Omaha to Oakland via Denver and Salt Lake City is still very much in use - principally for freight, but some Amtrak passenger trains still use it as well.

Transcontinental. WHICH CONTINENT? Did you mean North America. Canadian Pacific crossed the Continent over 100 years ago and is still in business. The tracks and ties are replaced every so often. The curves in the mountains areas are changed more often. There is Trans Continental in Mexico too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transcontinental_railroad The USA thing was many railways joining together to make a route.

The Transcontinental Railroad was begun by the Union Pacific(still in existence) from the east and the Central Pacific(now part of Union Pacific) from the west in 1863. Construction was completed with the driving of the golden spike at Promontory, Utah in 1869. This connected San Francisco, Ca to Omaha, Ne. The original line is still in use today except for a section that was bypassed in 1904 by the Lucin Cutoff across the Great Salt lake.
