Is RADA still a good drama school nowadays?

What monologues should I choose for drama school auditions?

  • Hey everyone, I am looking to apply for drama school entry for September 2015. The three I am applying to are: RADA LAMDA Oxford School of Drama. I need to prepare two Shakespeare ...show more

  • Answer:

Many drama schools have a list of recommended audition monologues on their websites. In Australia, two of the highest profile schools, W.A.A.P.A and N.I.D.A. do this. They are chosen for length and the way they demonstrate ability and potential. The list includes both contemporary and Shakespearean. With a bit of research (look at Drama UK for a full list of accredited schools) you should be able to find some age appropriate ones. It is wise to avoid the obvious, overdone ones as the audition panel has seen them performed brilliantly by many young actors. It is also wise to not choose something too obscure. Another thing to be aware of is that the panel will expect that you know the plays they come from very well. Preparation is crucial, as many people auditioning have auditioned previously. Know why you have chosen that school, avoiding the obvious "it's one of the best schools in the world". A bit more thought is required... You will find that approximately two thirds of first year students selected by these schools have undergraduate degrees and/or extensive experience and are at least twenty years old. Students your age are thought to have exceptional potential and despite lack of experience, worth a risk.

Ask your drama teacher for suggestions - he or she will know loads of them, and be able to advise you which are best for you. Never do a well-known one - the panels get sick to death of them! Also, do bear in mind that you'll need to have at least 8 Shakespeare and 8 modern monologues, as well as 8 songs. If you get through the first round, they'll want different ones, and also they can sometimes stop you, mid-monologue, and tell you to do a different one!
