Best Lures for Barramundi?

Are dark lures better for muddy water than bright lures?

  • I have always been under the impression that bright lures such as yellow, chartreuse and orange etc were better to use in muddy water than dark lures because of how bright they stand ...show more

  • Answer:

Darker colors in muddy water, brighter colors in stained water. Big difference. But, y'never really know. It usually works that way, but it's not set in stone. There's always gonna be that ONE fish that isn't gonna follow the rules and obey the laws. Y'know what I mean?

There are a lot of articles about color...frankly, color means nearly nothing. Fish don't see color quite the same as we do, and depth makes a huge difference. Do you think that parrot colored crankbait looks as bright to a bass when it's 10 feet underwater as it does to you, in your tacklebox? No! 10-15 feet down, it looks like a dark blue/purple, even to our eyes, even in gin clear water. Shoot, I've seen an angler go from throwing a shad colored crankbait to a red crankbait (same model) to a parrot or firetiger color (again, same exact model of crankbait), and have no change in productivity. Caught just as many fish from the same spot under the same conditions, because they were keyed in on the sound and motion, not the color.

Dan B and GMB are both right, (TU'S). Darker color's generally work better for muddy water, but, there are exceptions. I paint lures as a side-line. The best muddy water/night fishing color I've seen that works in most conditions is a lure that is black with blue highlights. (My Night Zombie color has glow in the dark eyes which seems to work even better) BUT, like GMB mentions, I've seen chartreuse and flat white work in muddy water too. Realize- Fishing is predictable to a point. It is not a "Science". Nature always has a way of throwing you a curve ball. (Heck, that's why successful fishermen typically count their lures by the POUND! lol)
