How to surf fish on Sanibel Island Florida?

  • wanna catch some big fish and a lot of them but im not interested in catching sharks

You already have 3 answers with good information in each. Only thing I can add is that you are not going to catch really big fish from the beach, except maybe snook as they start crusing the beach this time of year. DO NOT stand in the water if you're targeting snook, stay several feet back from waters edge. Most fish will be within 50' or LESS of waters edge. Many cruise the trough between the sand bars. I prefer passes to the beach. Check out blind pass and redfish pass over there. The causeway spoil islands also are very good.

The universal live bait is shrimp. On a beach you can usually catch all the sand fleas you want free. If you use dead bait, or dead "live " bait you have to consider what kind of fish is a scavenger and would eat the dead stuff in the ocean. Yuck, no self respecting game fish would eat some dead thing in the water, they want FRESH, live and kicking and more fun to attack, RIGHT? As always anyone who is new to saltwater fishing I always suggest this little kindle book called Florida Saltwater Fishing Beginners Guide. By now so many of my coworkers and friends have read it and for a short about 2 hour lesson of reading this sure seems to help. And they don't bug me as much either. At least they do know where to start. And what they need. Two major considerations you do not know. First only fish a moving tide. When the tide is slack it is like skinning frogs teeth catching any fish. And second, stealthy as possible in your rigging of terminal tackle. Saltwater fish are much smarter then freshwater fish. NO highly visible steel leaders then, Right ? You northerners always want to use steel leaders. NO STEEL LEADERS.

Staap It

Line: Use 20-25 lb test Rig: Have a size 4 hook on a pre made leader about 16 inches up from a 2 oz sinker Bait: Shrimp (alive or frozen) or bait fish Casting: Most fish that you will catch will be within 100 ft of shore, so you don't need to cast out too far. It will take some experimenting to find where the fish are though. Time: I have found that the best times to catch fish there are from 6am-9am and 6pm-9pm Good luck!
