How to change a dimmer switch back to a regular light switch?

I have a light switch controlling two ceiling lights in the living room. Now I want to change it to a dimmer switch - what type do I need?

  • Answer:

The important thing with a dimmer switch is to buy one rated to suit the total wattage of the bulbs. They state a range which they can handle. A single gang one way version will be fine. A two way switch can be used as a one way if that is all that is on offer. See link for examples and note the capacity in watts. Also bear in mind that some bulbs are unsuitable for dimming. Energy savers have to be listed as dimmable.

One switch application will be single pole, it would be good to first remove the old switch and see if there is a white neutral wire connected and running through the switch box. Some new dimmers have a third wire connection, if you don't have one your choices will be limited. Most dimmers for CFLs or LEDs require the third wire type switch, a two wire switch may flicker when off.

One gang, one (or two) way.
