Railroad tie pergola?

  • I am considering building a pergola using railroad ties as the support posts. I am concerned about two things: 1. Will it smell after I seal it with linseed oil or polyurethane? 2. ...show more

  • Answer:

Yes it will have a slight ordor.Railroad ties are better used on projects that use them like steps or embankment holds or gate posts things you won't be around too much but like all things outdoors they will mellow out in time.If you need something thicker than just 2x4's consider using landscape timber. They are usually 6ft long and easy to work with.

Railroad ties that were treated with creosote will NOT have termites or other bugs in them - that's why they were creosoted in the first place! The fumes that creosote gives off may not be healthy to breathe in if you use them in a small area. I have seen warnings not to use them for firewood indoors for this reason too. Landscape timber is far and away your best bet.
